1. Choose the Perfect Location

Washington boasts a variety of stunning landscapes, making it one of the most diverse states for elopements. Whether you envision saying your vows on a misty mountain trail, beside a rushing waterfall, or on a secluded beach, there’s a perfect spot waiting for you. Some of the most popular locations include:

  • Mount Rainier National Park: Iconic views and serene alpine meadows—perfect for couples who love majestic backdrops.
  • Olympic National Park: A mix of lush rainforests, rugged coastlines, and snowy peaks for diverse photo opportunities.
  • North Cascades National Park: Known as the “American Alps,” it’s perfect for adventurous couples seeking epic mountain scenery.
  • Snoqualmie Pass: Accessible, yet surrounded by breathtaking views and alpine lakes. Great for year-round access.

2. Plan the Legal Details

To make your marriage official in Washington State, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Obtain a Marriage License: Apply for your license at least three days before your ceremony. You can get one from any Washington county, and it’s valid statewide for up to 60 days. To learn more information search ” (county name) marriage license” and you should be able to find your specific county’s government website with information for how to obtain your marriage license.
  • Choose an Officiant: Washington allows a variety of officiants, including ordained ministers, judges, and even a friend or family member who’s been temporarily ordained.
  • Have Two Witnesses: Washington requires at least two witnesses to sign your marriage license.

Pro Tip: If you’re eloping in a remote area, bring friends, family, or even your photographer as witnesses to keep it intimate yet legal. You can also ask a couple of hikers on the trail to be your witnesses! *Story-time: For one of my couples elopements we went to Crater Lake. At the end of their ceremony we asked two hikers if they would be willing to be witnesses for them and they said YES! Come to find out, they were hikers on the PCT who started their journey in Mexico and came all the way from Europe to make the journey. Talk about right place at the right time!*

3. Consider the Best Time of Year

Washington’s weather varies greatly by season and location, so choosing the right time of year is essential:

  • Spring (March-May): Beautiful wildflowers bloom in the mountains, but lower elevations may still be rainy. Ideal for couples who love fresh, vibrant landscapes.
  • Summer (June-August): The most popular time for elopements, with warm weather and clear skies. Perfect for mountain or coastal ceremonies.
  • Fall (September-November): Vibrant autumn colors and cooler temperatures make for cozy, romantic vibes. Great for forest settings.
  • Winter (December-February): Perfect for a snowy adventure elopement in the mountains or a moody coastal vibe.

Eloping doesn’t mean sacrificing adventure. In fact, it’s a chance to tailor the day to your love story. Think about activities that reflect your personalities and relationship, such as:

  • Hiking to a secluded overlook.
  • Saying your vows during a sunrise or sunset ceremony.
  • Canoeing, kayaking, or paddleboarding for a water-based elopement.
  • Exploring a charming small town before your ceremony.
  • Having a post-ceremony picnic with your favorite foods.
